While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?”
On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ FOR I HAVE NOT COME TO CALL THE RIGHTEOUS, BUT SINNERS.”

Presumably, there was a backstory which led up to Matthew instantly dropping everything at Jesus' invitation/command. (The Chosen explores that brilliantly.) And there is a backstory for every one of us.

So much beauty in these paintings. Of course, Caravaggio (#2) is of great importance. Non only his realism was innovative at the time, but the play of light and dark adds a beautiful and and dramatic effect. The men are dressed in contemporary garments, symbolically depicting the way of the world versus the timelessness of another world. Jesus’ gesture is so direct and compelling that it seems to suspend the action for a moment. The calling of Matthew is also our calling..so simple...so profound..”Follow me”...
